Klickitat River Wild Steelhead-August 2012

KLICKITAT RIVER STEELHEAD
Autumn Program-2012

Fly fishing for Steelhead.  Once this fish gets in your blood and begins coursing through your veins these exciting ocean going rainbow trout for a fly fishermen become a life long obsession.  Venturing thousands of miles away from there home rivers every season, steelhead disappear into the salty waters of the Pacific Ocean, only to return one to four years later bigger, bright chrome and as powerful as a locomotive.

June 1st marks the beginning of a new Klickitat River Steelhead season.  This magnificent river located in Southwest Washington, just west of the town of Goldendale produces some of the finest Columbia River tributary steelhead fishing you will find.

The headwaters of this glacier feed river course from the snow packed peaks of Mount Adams, a potentially active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range and the second-highest mountain in Washington State.
This steep, gradient river drops over 5000 feet in elevation from the mouth of it's source to the town of Lyle where it meets the Columbia River.  With such a dramatic gradient, a fly fisher must be open minded and versatile when meeting the challenges of the Klickitat.  Both nymphing and swinging style presentations will at some point be good, but not every run is conducive for both.  Keep this in mind when fishing the waters of the Klick!
For (13) thirteen seasons, the Professional Guiding Staff of WBFC has experienced these dramatic, powerful rainbows testing the skills of even the best fly fishermen.  Every steelhead you encounter is different and every battle is unequaled.  Bring your (A) game to the Klickitat...because these 8 to 12 pound Summer Steelhead will give you everything they got and then some!
Klickitat River Wild Steelhead-August 2012

The Klickitat Steelhead fishing season begins each year on June 1st and concludes the last day in November.  Over this five month period, the Klickitat will experience runs of four different runs of anadromous species; Spring Chinook Salmon (King), Steelhead, Fall Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon.  The most popular time to fish the Klickitat by far is the month of September, October and November when the majority of all these fish species have returned or are just returning.

Within the U.S. boundary of the Columbia River there are 11 dams pinpointed along its 1242 mile stretch, until it eventually meets with the Pacific Ocean.  In between the first lower river dam, (Bonneville) and the second up stream dam, (The Dalles) links the first of many river confluences.  Only 50 miles separates these two monstrous concrete steel barriers from each other.  In between them positioned perfectly are both the gradient, glacierial drainages of the Klickitat and Wind Rivers.

As the Klick snakes through and around the Gifford Pinchot Wilderness and across the Yakama Indian Reservation eventually colliding with the Columbia River, it offers Summer Steelhead a cool water retreat.  The science here is quite simple.  As Steelhead begin entering the Columbia River after a 1 to 4 year cycle in the Pacific Ocean, they feel the cool, glacier water of the Klickitat.

Many times over a 90 day plus period, traveling fish not originally imprinted in the genetic makeup of the Klickitat make a detour, venturing into the river during the warm summer months.  As water temperatures rise in the main stem of the Columbia during the searing months of summer, Steelhead find the oxygen filled, cool glacier waters of the Upper Klick inviting and take advantage of its auspicious nature, traversing the steep gradient and propelling current.
Many of the hatchery steelhead oriented from the up river hatchery return during the summer months as well, increasing the steelhead stock numbers in the system.

River flows in September, October and November usually don’t vary much, unless a major Autumn rain storm pushes across Mount Adams from the Portland, Oregon area.  If this occurs, you will find a mess and will have to wait it out a day or two.  Most times you will find "gin" clear water flowing from the glacier during the autumn months.

Klickitat River Stream Flows

WHERE WE FISH, WHY & HOW

The Klickitat encompasses over 75 miles of unbelievable steelhead water.  The WBFC guide team prefers to work a couple of very specific stretches of the upper river...for a couple of good reasons.

Over the past couple of the years, the Klickitat has entered the radar of just about every guide, outfitter and steelheader in Washington and Oregon.  This will be our 13th year of guiding the waters of the Upper Klickitat.

Like any popular river, specific sections are busier then others.  The lower portions of the Klickitat can be a boat show with both fly, spey and gear fishermen all sharing the same water.  Bank fishermen find easy access to the river as well because State Route 142 winds along the lower river offering road side access to the Klickitat.  We prefer to work the “Upper Klick” for several key reasons.

  • It’s not as popular of piece of water then the lower river, but in our opinion it’s the ultimate fly water on the entire Klickitat.  Its a true wilderness experience away from cellular reach and the distractions of a highway going right along the river.
  • Steelhead are constantly moving up river, especially in the fall months following Chinook Salmon to there spawning grounds.  These are key area’s where Steelhead prefer to hold.  The majority of spawning takes place in the upper reaches of the river as well.  Hatchery origin fish move to the upper river during the summer months because the hatchery is located just a few miles from the town of Glenwood.
  • The scenery is absolutely spectacular, especially in the month of October when the fall foliage begins turning.  Its an amazing place to be this time of year.
  • The Upper Klickitat from Summit Creek to Liedl Campground is approximately 5 miles of river.  By September and October the river has dropped into Fall flows.  Shortening the length of your drift and working the water is crucial. We prefer to give our guest more then one or two shots at the key holding spots for steelhead...run and gun isn't our style.  We like to take our time and make sure we work every key spot, boulder, drop off and run where a steelhead could be resting.  Anyone that truly knows steelhead and their behaviors would agree and appreciate this effort.  We use the boat mainly as a tool to move us from run to run.  We do encourage fishing from the boat and use it to fish key spots that can’t be utilized from the water.
  • We have spent the last decade perfecting the use of Switch Rods on floating lines in the Upper Klickitat and each member of our team is well verse in there use.  Its a superb tool for getting the job done...and lots of fun to fish during your day.
