Yakima River Dry Fly Fishing

WBFC PRE-SEASON SPECIAL-2015

02/23/2016

Beginning February 15th to March 31st, 2015, WBFC will be offering our "Pre Season" Guided Tour Special of the Upper Yakima River. This officially kicks off the new fly fishing season for us and provides you with the chance to get out and experience some of the best fishing the Yakima can provide this time of year.
Because "Day-Light Savings" time does not take effect until Sunday, March 8th, 2015, the window for excellent fishing opportunity will be between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. These are the key times to target pre-Skwala and adult Skwala activity, any Blue Wing Olive hatch that might emerge during the day and the exciting post winter spawn time of the Yakima Rivers, Sculpins.
For those of you that prefer a longer day of fly fishing, our Full Day Guided Trips will become available after March 31st, when Day Light Savings time has taken full effect and we can utilize an entire day of fishing.  We are taking reservations now, so don't wait to take advantage of this spring special.  Some of the best dry fly, nymphing and streamer fishing you will see all year wrap up in one exciting day!
Jump start your 2015 fly fishing season and take advantage of this excellent opportunity to chase some aggressive post winter rainbows, cutthroats and cutt-bows on Central Washington's fabulous blue ribbon river.

Its Big Fish Time......Lets Go!
As the air temperatures warm in February, the water temperatures will follow suit and signal our first stonefly hatch of the year, the Skwala Stonefly.  Learn the intricate nymphing and tactical dry fly techniques used by our professional guide team to target the Yakima's upper age class rainbows by imitating both the nymph and adult Skwala stonefly throughout the day.

As the morning progresses and the early afternoon arrives, dry fly fishing will commence as March Browns and Blue Wing Olives begin hatching (Mid March thru May). This is the best of the best match the hatch spring fly fishing the Yakima provides.  Big Rainbows and Cutthroat slashing and slurping large mayflies from the surface.

After this intense hatch of mayfly we will concentrate on three other exciting elements.

  1. The mayflies that have drowned in the surface film during the hatch are being eaten just under that meniscus.  We will fish drowned emergers and soft hackles to mimic this food source.

  2. The remaining adult mayflies that are floating along the edges, back pools and eddies of the river current become targeted and big trout stage in these key area's after the hatch to take advantage of this easy feed.

  3. The Skwala Stoneflies will still be hatching into the first portion of April. Why?  The colder weather we had through the middle of March slowed down the migration of nymphs from the river bottom to the bank as well as the egg laying female's return to the water.  We will continue to fish Skwala patterns through the first week to ten days of April.

Do not miss out, our spots are beginning to fill.  Many of our clients have learned over the years that this is one of the most exciting times of the season to fish the Yakima. Reserve your day with one of our guides today! Call the Ellensburg Pro-Shop at 888-950-3474 (FISH).
