Ryan was born in the Seattle suburb of Redmond, Washington.
His family later moved north to the small rural city of
Stanwood, located about 60 miles from the metropolises of
Seattle. It is here that legendary steelhead and salmon
rivers stream through the agricultural terrain of Snohomish
County, eventually converging with the Puget Sound. It is
these places that echo some of the legendary beginnings of
Pacific Northwest Steelheading. As a young man, Ryan began
to explore and consume the western waters of Washington
State and develop a passion for being outdoors. |
|
|
During his teenage years, Ryan began to explore the waters
of the Skagit and Snohomish Valley’s, fishing tributaries
and main stream stems of the Stillagaumish, Skagit, and
Sammish Rivers. An occasional adventure to the local lakes
was also on the docket; however, most of his fishing time
was spent hiking up and down the smaller intimate waters of
Pillchuck Creek. |
|
|
| At
the early age of eight, Ryan’s grandfather first introduced
him to the angling craft known as fly fishing. Soon after
that he also exposed Ryan to the fine art of fly tying and
his skills quickly flourished under his grandfather’s
tutelage. To date, Ryan still spends time fly fishing with
his grandfather in the Spokane River Valley. Ryan was
also noted as being a superb athlete growing up and excelled
in many sports, especially baseball. |
|
|
|
After graduating from Stanwood High School, Ryan moved to
Entiat, Washington and attended Wenatchee Valley Community
College. During his vocation he played baseball for the WVC
Knights. Between class and a busy baseball schedule, Ryan
wondered around Chelan and Okanogan Counties looking for
every available fly fishing opportunity. During his free
time he was able to explore the fine waters of the Methow,
Entiat, and Chewuck Rivers. |

Upon completing
two years of schooling at WVC, Ryan moved to Ellensburg to
attend Central Washington University. Here he would study
and pursue his Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreational
Management. He also continued his baseball career, playing
several different positions for the CWU Wildcats.
|
|
|
|
During his time in
Ellensburg, Ryan was also compelled to study the intricate
details and hatches of the Yakima River. Upon completing
his education and receiving his degree, Ryan retired his
baseball cleats and began to fly fishing the Yakima
religiously. He became a frequent sight here at the
Worley-Bugger. Browsing the aisle of endless fly tying
materials purchasing all he could while picking the brains
of Steve and Tim any chance he could. |
|
|
|
Under
Tim Irish’s encouragement,
Ryan was asked to join the team at Worley Bugger in 2006.
Shortly after under
Steve's
direction, Ryan’s preparation, training and
initiation into the guiding staff began.

“I am truly doing
something I love to do and there is no other place I would
rather be than on the river.” |

|
|
Over the
past twelve years, I myself and my staff have trained
and instructed several guides here at the Worley
Bugger. We give each and every one of them the
necessary training, encouragement and equipment to
excel in their position. Once we do that we
watch and see as each and everyone of them grow into a
well oiled guiding machine. |
|
|
|
Since that
time, Ryan has quickly absorbed the information and
understanding every man needs to become not just a
guide, but an exceptional one. Ryan is well on his
way to becoming a talent that will leave a mark on
this fly fishing valley for years to come. His skills
as a fly fisher continue to evolve and fascinate and
his skills at the fly tying vise are extraordinary.
Its been fun and amazing to see him blossom into the
guide he is today. |
|
|
|
I am
confident that our fly fishing guest's of all skill
levels will find their guided tour with Ryan not only
a fun and unique experience but a learning one
as well. We are especially pleased to have him
as an interracial part of the team here at Worley
Bugger and I am secure in saying I am sure your day
with Ryan will be one well spent. |
